Tall Side Table

My last side table was very short and squat, now this one is very tall and thin. How about I find a great deal on an average sized table next?? :)

I got this one at the Goodwill store for under $10. I liked it's casters and the drawer pulls right away. It had a leather inset on the table top but I was pretty sure chalk paint would cover it just fine.

There were also some notches out of each leg where there must have been a shelf at one point. I just filled them in with wood filler and sanded it smooth. Here's a kind of bad picture of it. Sorry!

I painted most of the table with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. But I wanted to try and make it different and unique rather than just another off white table, you know? So I painted the leather inset with Provence. At first it was way too blue, but I knew I would be using dark wax to darken it later.

This picture actually makes it look nicer than it did in person. Pictures can be so deceiving, can't they? It doesn't help that I probably took this at 5am, that's when most things get done around this house.

So here's one of the top after I waxed it with clear wax first and dark second. For some reason I just couldn't get the dark wax to go on smoothly, maybe because of the leather underneath.

So it was back to the drawing board.

I painted over it in old white instead. Maybe my NEXT piece of furniture will be different ;) I tried using the dark wax in the inset area again and again I just didn't like how it was going on.

So I painted over it AGAIN. This time I got out my old Ralph Lauren tinted glaze. I got it from Home Depot but I'm not sure if they carry it anymore. I glazed just in the inset area and it looked just how I wanted. Finally.

I put it in my living room just for some pictures, but I've completely fallen in love with it there! It's supposed to go to Mindy's Classic Finds so we'll see what Scott thinks :) I thought it was so tall before, but it's the perfect height for our couch!

Wether it stays in our living room or goes to the store I'm just glad to get it out of my work room!!

  1. Oh my goodness! I'm 63. When I was a little girl my mother had those exact side tables. She sent them off to graduate school with me. When I moved, I gave them to the girl upstairs. What a great new look!!!

  2. Wow!!! That's awesome! I wish I had a matching one. I DID find a coffee table at the same GoodWill store about a month earlier that seems to match pretty well. But the casters are gone and it looks like someone just sawed them off! I still bought it though, we'll see if I can salvage it :)

  3. This turned out really cute! Are you keeping it? Sorry it took so many tries to get it right... I'm working on a project like that right now :(

  4. Hi Heidi,
I love your table re-do! I have a hard time applying the dark wax, too. It just seems to get stuck. One trick I read somewhere is to follow with the clear wax to remove the dark.
